Glass
has from very early times been used for various kinds of vessels, and in
all countries where this industry has been developed there has produced
a great variety of forms and kinds of decoration, much of it of great beauty.

Glass manufacturing
on the present territory of Romania, with its more than 200 years tradition,
has been putting in turn the local material resources, the human potential
and creativity that nurtured in this blessed Carpatho-Danubian expanse. |

History
In
late 1860s and 1870s three individual artists in France were experimenting
in glasswork. The first was Joseph Brocard whose main ambition was to reproduce
medieval Syrian glass. The second was Eugene Rousseau whose glasses were
thick walled and translucid, often with interior crackling and shot with
random streaks of color. The third of them was Emile Galle of Nancy who
developed the use of deeply coloured almost opaque glasses in heavy masses,
often cased or etched to form plant motifs. His inspiration undoubtedly
reflects the prevailing in Japanese art, and much of his methods must have
been suggested by those of Chinese glass.

Among
the later leaders of French glass art was Rene Lalique whose work is characterized
by relief decoration produced by blowing into moulds or by pressing.

Galle type
glassware started to be made in Romania when the daughter of Royal Manufacture's
owner in Azuga went to study in France, married a young man of the Montesy
family and came back home bringing the Galle technique with her.
Much later,
Buzau, a very old town of Romania lying between the Carpathian mountains
and the fertile lowlands of south-eastern part of the country, became famous
for its Galle type vases and lamps and bowls as well as for Daum Nancy
type articles and Muller and Schneider type items with floral, landscape,
geometrical and biblical designs.
